Printer – Wiki, Types and Uses

Introduction

Electronic devices which accept text files or images from a computer and put it down on a paper or film is relevantly called a Printer. It can be connected directly or indirectly with a computer via a network. Talking about the evolution of printers there are several types of printers developed so there is no single inventor cited, however, the man who invented the first mechanical printing device was Charles Babbage. Printers can be further distinguished into impact and non-impact printers.

Under the impact printers, we encounter dot-matrix printers having several pins on the print head which emerge then to form a character printer

Relatively under the non-impact printers, we have laser printers, ink-jet printers and thermal printers.

To elaborate on the working of the same we can enumerate that whilst laser printers use the laser beam to attract toner to an area of the paper, ink-jet ones spray a jet of the liquid ink with thermal printers transferring wax-based ink or using the heated pins to directly imprint the image on the specially-treated paper. If we talk about the characteristics of a printer they involve resolution (in dots per inch), its speed (in sheets of paper per minute), colour (multi-colour, black or white) and even cache memory.

Elaborating more on the characteristics of the printer starting with a colour which is important for the users to print the pages for presentation and printing images or maps. They can also be set to print in just black or white. Because of its ability to print in colour, it’s relatively expensive as it uses two cartridges which are replaced after a certain number of pages. Relatively users who need to print a lot and do not need coloured ones much make use of the black and white printer.

Looking into the next characteristic which is resolution usually measured in dots per inch (dpi), it resonates with the sharpness of text and images on the paper. Even the most inexpensive printers provide a resolution of 600dpi.

Moving onto the speed of printers, if printing takes place very often then speed is a major concern. Where the inexpensive printers provide a speed of 3 to 6 sheets per minute, expensive printers are much faster. Remember that coloured printing is pretty slower.

If we move forward and further elaborate on a 3-D printer, it prints tools or parts needed to build something, prints replacement parts for something broken, prints toys for children and even objects to be sold.

Hence based on the printer we use, its usage varies diversely. Although most of the use of the 3-d printers, laser printers are far flourished in real-time.

Types of Printers

  • Ink Tank Printer
  • Ink Jet Printer
  • Laser Printer
  • Thermal Printer

Ink tank Printers

Ink tank Printers are those printers which has a pipe system that are connected to ink bottles that are fitted inside the printer and can be filled and re-filled with inks. There are four colours of liquid inks which are filled in the bottles and those are – cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Combinations from these 4 colours are then use to make millions of other colours. These printers are valuable for those people, particularly kids and students who has school and college projects to make. Ink tank printers make colourful printing for them more affordable. Also refilling inks in the ink tank printers are much easier and they can print up to 1500 pages per refill depending upon the capacity of bottles and brand of the printers. Also the refilling cost is neither much expensive, nor much cheaper. For refilling, a person needs to just pour the ink in the ink tank bottle, which is not much difficult to do. This process makes the refilling much convenient as the person does not have to carry around the printer for the refilling. The major drawback of these printers is that if these printers are not used for longer duration of time, the liquid inks can get dried up. So it is always recommend to use the printer at least ones per 18 to 20 days.

Ink Jet Printers

Ink Jet Printers are those printers which requires cartridges instead of bottled inks. In these printers, the ink cartridges are inserted inside the printers. These printers are the traditional types of printers. These printers are much cheaper as compared to other varieties of printers. But cartridges in these printers can be messy sometimes as they can get damaged and can leak ink easily, which makes the cleaning process much difficult process. Also the cartridge are expensive and has printing capacity up to just 150 pages per ink cartridge, depending upon the printer.

Laser Printers

Laser Printers are those printers which use toners instead of liquid bottled inks, like those in ink tank and ink jet printers. The toner in these printers consists of dry powdered ink which never gets dried up. So it makes them more efficient to use. But these printers are quite expensive as compared to other types of printers. These printers are much more efficient and faster in printing pages as compared to other printers which makes them justified to their cost. These printers are perfect for office and industrial use as printing invoices and bills with these printers needs speed. The drawback using these printers is that sometimes, if the moisture gets in contact with the dry ink powder, then in can create troubles in printing. Although, black ink laser printers are expensive then colour ink tank and in jet printers, yet colour laser printer are much more expensive.

Thermal Printers

Thermal Printers are the ones that are being used more commonly in stores and markets. These printers use thermal paper. Thermal printers uses the technology of heating. In the process, a particular area is heated, creating a design on it. These printers are very small and compact in size. These printers are commonly used to print receipts and bills in restaurants, super markets and various other types of retail stores.

3D Printers

3D printers are becoming more popular these days. These printer are much more revolutionized and innovative.
